Ibéricos: A Taste of Spain in Montreal’s Plateau – Complete Review & Guide

Spanish tapas dining is one of my all-time favorite experiences. There’s something truly special about gathering with friends to share a bunch of small dishes, all while sipping on a cocktail. It’s the perfect way to sample a little bit of everything and order extra of your favorites! I recently visited Ibéricos Taverne à Tapas Espagnoles in the Plateau, Montreal, and it was an unforgettable experience. With the promise of “No need to fly to Spain; Ibéricos will bring España to you,” they absolutely delivered on that expectation. Here’s my full review and guide to Ibéricos, complete with tips on how to save!

The Story of Ibéricos

Ibéricos brings the warmth and vibrant flavors of Spain to Montreal’s culinary landscape. Founded in 2019 by Chef Haissam Souki Tamayo and his partner Adriana, Ibéricos is the culmination of their international journey through Spain’s finest kitchens, from the bustling streets of San Sebastián to the revered dining spots of the Basque and Catalan regions. At Ibéricos, the essence of Spanish tavernas meets Quebec’s local ingredients, offering a menu rich in Iberian classics like patatas bravas, croquetas, and the renowned Iberian ham, all paired with carefully selected Spanish wines and lively music. It’s a slice of España in the heart of Montreal, where Haissam and Adriana have created a space that emphasizes both great food and a memorable experience.

The Menu

Each dish at Ibéricos showcases authentic flavors, crafted with locally sourced ingredients. You’ll find mouthwatering tapas like Bunuelos de Bacalao (cod fritters), Jamon Ibérico Croquetas, and the classic Spanish Tortilla. And don’t forget to try the paellas! Whether you go for the classic Valencian Paella or the fresh Seafood Paella, each option is a delicious nod to Spain’s rich culinary heritage. To complement your meal, the wine list features a curated selection of Spanish wines, including fortified options and sparkling Cava, alongside a variety of reds and whites and, of course, Sangria! You can order à la carte or choose the Chef’s Tasting Menu, where you can be surprised by the chef’s favorites for $78 per person, or opt for family tasting menus at $155, featuring 5-6 dishes designed to feed 3 people.

Our Dining Experience

We visited Ibéricos on Saturday, October 19, on a crisp fall night, wanting to make the most of the last few weeks of al fresco dining. We sat on the patio, which turned out to be a great choice; even though we booked for 6 p.m., the restaurant was nearly full by 6:30. The patio also offered some fantastic people-watching along Rue Saint-Denis.

To start, we ordered an Espresso Martini and a Coke Zero. For appetizers, we chose Manchego Cheese Croquettes and Fried Calamari. The croquettes were the highlight of the meal—sharp Manchego cheese in a creamy béchamel sauce, served piping hot. We devoured them instantly! The calamari came with squid ink aioli and Basque peppers, an unexpected but delicious combination. For each dish, the chef came out to explain each dish to us, which was a unique and interesting touch.

For mains, we shared Patatas Bravas, Garlic Shrimp, and (yes) another round of those amazing croquettes. The Patatas Bravas featured tender potatoes with a spicy chipotle tomato sauce and aioli, while the shrimp were sautéed in a garlic, chili, and parsley sauce, served with fresh bread to soak up every bit of that flavorful sauce. Five plates in, we were stuffed, but still managed room for dessert. To end the meal, we shared the Tres Leches cake, a rich sponge soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whole milk. It was perfectly creamy and the best way to finish an incredible meal.

Price Point

Small tapas plates are priced between $10 and $12 each, while the Tapas Del Chef and paellas range from $16 to $28. For our meal, which included six dishes, one cocktail, and one soft drink, the total came to $120 (before tip). This breaks down to just $60 per person, making it an incredibly affordable dining option by Montreal standards!
