I booked my tour a couple of days before my flight through GetYourGuide. Getting There
My tour departed from Cairns airport, just 15 minutes from Cairns town. I received an email with all the instructions, so finding it was super easy. Note that the tour isn’t located within the main Cairns airport but has its own runway. Since I had a flight later that day, I took a short Uber to the main airport. Walking is possible but in the heat it’s not ideal.
Before take-off we had a 20-minute briefing where the pilot explained the route, pointed out the sights, covered safety instructions and gave tips for spotting marine life from above. It was relaxed, informative and a great way to settle any nerves before leaving the ground.
Boarding the Plane
We had a small group of eight, which ensured everyone had a window seat. Here’s the best part for solo travelers like me: I got to sit next to the pilot in the cockpit, which was such a cool experience!
We took off from the small runway and passed over the brown mangroves below (which is a great chance to spot crocs). As we left the harbour behind, glimpses of the reef began to appear. Within a few minutes, we were over the outer reef, where the shades of blue, green and white were absolutely breathtaking.
Sitting in the co-pilot seat gave me a front-row view of the reef. It was such a unique perspective and one of those travel perks you rarely get unless you go solo.

During the 40-minute flight, you’ll glide over some of the reef’s most iconic spots:
- Green Island – a tropical paradise surrounded by turquoise waters
- Oyster Reef – vibrant coral formations

- Arlington Reef & Middle Cay – perfect for spotting marine life
The plane has large windows, and the pilot provides informative commentary via headphones. The colours were absolutely spectacular! We even spotted an island where helicopters land and people can have their own private island – definitely one for the bucket-list!
Spotting Wildlife
One of the highlights was spotting marine life from above. If you’re lucky, you might see turtles, dugongs and manta rays moving beneath the plane. Visit during whale season (July–August) and you might even catch humpback whales breaching in the distance.
