What it’s like spending the night in the Daintree Rainforest: Review and Guide to Daintree Ecolodge

Sleeping in the middle of the world’s oldest rainforest was a travel moment I knew I would never forget. I recently spent one unforgettable night at the Daintree Ecolodge, a nature focused retreat hidden deep within the ancient Daintree Rainforest, and it completely exceeded every expectation I had built up over the years. This stay had been sitting on my travel bucket list for a very long time, and finally ticking it off at the start of 2026 felt beyond special!

The lodge is tucked away in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest, believed to be over 180 million years old. As the oldest tropical lowland rainforest on Earth, the Daintree feels powerful, alive, and almost magical the moment you arrive. I stayed in one of their canopy treehouses, completely surrounded by lush greenery, rainforest sounds, and towering trees, and it was honestly one of the best stays of my life. From falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle to waking up high in the treetops, it felt like a true escape from the outside world.

This is my full review and guide to staying at the Daintree Ecolodge.

Disclosure: This stay was gifted. As always, all opinions and experiences shared are entirely my own.

Getting there

The closest airport to the Daintree Ecolodge is Cairns International Airport. I picked up my hire car using KINTO, which is a Toyota car rental app, and from there began the scenic drive north towards the Daintree Rainforest. The drive itself is incredibly beautiful, especially once you pass Cairns and begin following the coastline.

Make sure to stop at Rex Lookout, a coastal lookout just north of Port Douglas. This viewpoint offers breathtaking views where rainforest covered mountains meet the sea. It is one of the most photographed spots in the region and a perfect place to stretch your legs, take in the scenery, and snap a few photos.

Continuing north, the landscape becomes even more lush and wild as you approach the Daintree. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, but it feels like part of the experience rather than just a transfer.

Checking in

Parking and checking in was super easy. Once I arrived, the friendly staff talked me through the lodge, took me to my room, and gave me a full rundown of everything I needed to know. They confirmed my breakfast for the following day along with the spa experience I had booked, and they also suggested I book dinner at Julaymba, their onsite restaurant, which I happily did.

The staff made an amazing first impression and immediately made me feel welcome. I checked in at their main lodge, where the bar and restaurant are located, and the area was absolutely stunning. It is surrounded by a lagoon, with rainforest stretching in every direction. The sounds of the jungle were truly incredible, and it felt like everything around me was alive and breathing.

My room

This Intrepid property retreat truly feels like a luxury escape from the outside world. The lodge is home to just 15 eco treehouses, known as bayans, each designed to blend seamlessly into the rainforest environment. Staying here feels immersive in the best possible way. You fall asleep to the sounds of the forest and wake up to birds calling from the canopy above.

I had booked a canopy treehouse room, which is literally a treehouse set high within the lush fronds of the Daintree Rainforest. The moment I walked into the room, I was completely blown away. The space featured a generous bedroom along with a screened balcony complete with a day bed, making it the perfect place to relax and listen to the rainforest.

The first thing I noticed was the soundscape. The world around me felt truly alive with rainforest birds, insects, and distant calls echoing through the trees. The room itself was very spacious at 46 square metres and featured a king bed with stunning, lush bedding. It was beautifully air conditioned, along with ceiling fans, which is an absolute must in the tropical climate!

There was also a kitchenette with coffee and tea making facilities, including a teapot so I could steep my choice of three different teas. A mini fridge and French press were also included, all thoughtfully designed to encourage you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

The bathroom featured a rainfall shower head and beautiful local amenities made by Made Wild. There were also fluffy bathrobes and slippers, which always elevate a hotel stay for me. One of my favourite touches was the yoga mat in the room. I loved doing gentle evening stretches while listening to the rainforest sounds drifting in through the balcony.

Everything about the room felt incredibly thoughtful and intentionally designed to help you relax, disconnect, and fully ignore the outside world.

Facilities

The lodge is beautifully equipped with a gorgeous outdoor pool, a gym, a rainforest wellness spa, an onsite restaurant and bar, a natural waterhole, and even an onsite waterfall. After settling into my room, I made a beeline for the outdoor pool. The pool is open air and felt incredibly refreshing after the long drive and humid tropical weather.

After cooling off, I headed out on the self guided rainforest trail known as Baral Marrjanga. This 400 metre return walk winds through the rainforest and leads to a waterfall viewing deck. Depending on the season, you may spot Boyd’s Forest Dragons, Ulysses butterflies, Wompoo Fruit Doves, Azure and Buff breasted Kingfishers, Spectacled Monarchs, and more. Walking this trail truly made me feel like I was deep inside the rainforest rather than staying at a resort.

Another highlight was the Rainforest Wellness Spa which focuses on rejuvenating the mind, body, and soul, using natural products and techniques inspired by the surrounding environment. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend booking a treatment in advance so you do not miss out.

The following morning, I booked the Yulmarril Welcome package, which includes a tailored massage followed by a facial targeting your skin’s specific needs. The experience began with a skin consultation and a refreshing cold towel, followed by my wonderful therapist presenting three different scents for me to choose from. I was then guided into the treatment room for one of the most relaxing treatments of my life. It was so calming that I nearly fell asleep. Afterwards, I was offered a beautiful cup of herbal tea and water, leaving me feeling completely refreshed and restored.

In addition to these facilities, there are plenty of additional activities on offer. These include ordering a gourmet lunch hamper or picnic to enjoy at nearby spots like Mossman Gorge, Four Mile Beach, or Cape Tribulation, as well as yoga classes, cocktail making masterclasses, cooking classes with the chef, guided and self guided walks, private dining experiences, and even Indigenous basket weaving workshops.

Dining at Julaymba Restaurant

The lodge is also home to Julaymba, a stunning onsite restaurant where you can enjoy some of the finest cuisine the Daintree has to offer. The menu showcases incredible fresh North Queensland produce, with a strong focus on organic and seasonal ingredients, including produce grown in their own garden.

The restaurant is set beside a lagoon and feels incredibly special to dine at, especially as the rainforest comes alive around you in the evening. Eating dinner surrounded by nature, with soft lighting and jungle sounds in the background, is an experience in itself and the perfect way to unwind after a day of travel and exploration.

The dinner menu changes daily, but during my stay I enjoyed Wattle Seed Gnocchi with pickled mushroom, walnut, and crème fraîche, followed by a seasonal sorbet with crumble and fresh berries. I paired it with a spicy margarita, and the entire meal felt indulgent, thoughtful, and truly memorable.

Breakfast was included in my stay and was just as impressive. I ordered free range scrambled eggs with crispy bacon and tomato, along with a matcha latte and pineapple juice. Breakfast also included complimentary pastries and fresh fruit, and it was genuinely one of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time.

Things to do in the surrounding areas

There are endless things to do in the Daintree and surrounding areas, making this part of Far North Queensland one of the most exciting and diverse regions to explore. From ancient tropical rainforest to the crystal clear waters of the Coral Sea, the Daintree Ecolodge is perfectly positioned as a base for adventure, nature, and unforgettable day trips.

One of the most iconic experiences nearby is exploring the Daintree Rainforest itself. Believed to be over 180 million years old, this is the oldest tropical lowland rainforest on Earth and home to an extraordinary concentration of rare and endangered plant and animal species. Walking through the rainforest feels like stepping back in time. You can wander along boardwalks, spot towering ferns, discover hidden swimming holes, and if you are lucky, catch a glimpse of a southern cassowary. A cruise along the Daintree River is also a must do, offering the chance to spot prehistoric saltwater crocodiles while learning about the region’s unique ecosystem.

Just north of the Daintree River lies Cape Tribulation, one of the few places on Earth where the rainforest meets the reef. Reaching Cape Tribulation requires a ferry crossing, which makes the journey feel even more adventurous. This area is incredibly wild and untouched, with deserted beaches, rainforest lined boardwalks, crystal clear freshwater swimming holes, and breathtaking coastal scenery. It is the perfect place to disconnect, breathe in fresh air, and experience nature at its most raw and beautiful.

The Great Barrier Reef is another unmissable experience while staying in the region. As the largest living organism on Earth, the reef is a true natural wonder and even visible from outer space. From snorkelling and scuba diving to island day trips, fishing charters, luxury sunset cruises, and scenic helicopter flights, there are so many ways to experience the reef and its vibrant marine life. I took a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef and it was absolutely breath-taking! Find out more here!

A visit to Mossman and Mossman Gorge is also highly recommended. The town of Mossman is a charming rural township surrounded by sugar cane fields, with art galleries, country pubs, local stores, and a vibrant Saturday market showcasing regional produce. Just a short drive away, Mossman Gorge is one of the most beautiful parts of the Daintree National Park. Here you will find cool flowing streams, granite boulders, lush rainforest, and opportunities to learn about the deep cultural connection the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people have with the land through guided walks and cultural experiences.

Port Douglas is located around 45 minutes south of the lodge and offers a completely different but equally enjoyable experience. This laid back coastal town blends barefoot luxury with tropical charm. Spend time relaxing on Four Mile Beach, browsing boutique shops and galleries, enjoying incredible food at one of the many restaurants, or soaking up the café and bar culture.

Cairns is located just 1 hour 45 away and is where you will likely start your trip. I highly recommend doing the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforect Cableway while you are there. It’s the perfect way to experience The Wet Tropics of Queensland. I also recommend doing a day trip to Fitzroy Island – which is an Island paradise just 45 minutes away from Cairns.

Final Thoughts

Spending the night in the Daintree Rainforest was one of those travel experiences that genuinely lived up to the hype. Sleeping in a canopy treehouse, falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest, and waking up surrounded by lush greenery is something I will always remember. It felt completely different to a typical hotel stay and made the whole trip feel more special. Everything about the Daintree Ecolodge was beautifully designed and thoughtfully done. It felt luxurious without being over the top, and at the same time it still felt wild and rugged, which is exactly what you want when staying in the rainforest. From the rooms to the facilities, nothing felt forced or out of place. I absolutely loved how perfect it was as a base to explore the area. You can spend your days out exploring the rainforest, the river, or the reef, and then come back to a peaceful, comfortable space to relax and switch off.

If you are planning a trip to Far North Queensland and want a stay that feels unique, immersive, and genuinely memorable, this is one I would absolutely recommend adding to your itinerary!
