A Rich History
Steeped in nearly a century of history, Fairmont Le Château Montebello is far more than just a resort—it’s a living landmark. Built in 1930, this architectural marvel is considered the largest log cabin in the world, constructed with over 10,000 hand-cut red cedar logs transported from British Columbia to Montebello via the Canadian Pacific Railway. The project was the vision of Swiss-American Harold M. Saddlemire, inspired by the grand chalets of the Swiss Alps, and brought to life by Finnish master builder Victor Nymark. The hotel’s distinctive hexagonal design and rustic grandeur have made it an iconic destination in the Outaouais region, set between the Laurentian Mountains and the banks of the Ottawa River. What started as an exclusive private retreat evolved into a world-renowned resort that even hosted the 1981 G7 Economic Summit, welcoming leaders like Ronald Reagan and Pierre Elliott Trudeau, along with celebrities such as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford!

Location: Riverside Beauty Between Ottawa and Montreal
Fairmont Le Château Montebello is located at 392 Rue Notre Dame, Montebello, QC, about halfway between Montreal and Ottawa. The drive from Montreal took us around 90 minutes through the rolling countryside. The property is situated right along the Ottawa River, offering stunning waterfront views and a peaceful, nature-filled environment.

First Impressions & Check-In
After driving in from Montreal, we were instantly excited to spot the iconic Fairmont signage welcoming us to Fairmont Le Château Montebello. As we cruised down the beautiful, tree-lined driveway, the grandeur of the property unfolded before us. Spanning 300 acres, the resort boasts 200+ guest rooms and suites, two pools, tennis courts, a golf course, a marina, and over 5 kilometers of forested hiking trails—it’s truly a destination in itself.
Walking into the lobby was truly a moment of awe. A massive stone fireplace anchors the space, surrounded by five-story-high ceilings with exposed wooden beams, leather armchairs, cozy reading nooks, and rustic touches like mounted antlers and a charming lodge-style bar. It struck the perfect balance between wilderness retreat and historic grandeur.
Although our check-in time was scheduled for 4 p.m., we arrived at noon with plans to explore the grounds for a few hours beforehand. To our surprise and delight, our room was already ready! The front desk staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, offering us a quick overview of the property and handing us a detailed map (you’ll want one—there’s so much to explore!). They even presented us with a thoughtful welcome gift filled with local goodies, including artisanal treats from Chocomotive, Verger Croque Pomme, Lavande et Cie, and Nectar de Fleurs.

The Room: Classic Fairmont Comfort with a Rustic Twist
For our one-night stay, we were in a Fairmont Luxury King Room, a newly renovated garden-side guestroom. Located on level 4 of the property, the 20 m² (215 sq. ft.) room was beautifully updated, featuring classic Fairmont comforts with a cozy country lodge vibe.

The king-sized bed was exceptionally comfortable, with soft linens and plush pillows that made it so easy to drift off! We had ample charging ports and reading & tableside lights to choose from.

Our room featured a separate sitting area with a cozy armchair, a large work desk, and tons of closet space. Amenities included a mini fridge, Nespresso machine, Lot 35 Tea Bags, kettle, and high-speed internet, all of which added to the convenience and comfort of the space. We loved the spacious layout and the warm wood accents that tied everything together.

The bathroom featured beautiful marble finishes and a relaxing rainfall shower.

One of my favorite details at any Fairmont is the Le Labo toiletries—the scent always brings me back and instantly reminds me I’m at a Fairmont!

Between the natural light, the garden views, and the gorgeous rustic design, this room delivered everything we could have wanted for a relaxing countryside retreat!
Dining Options at Fairmont Le Château Montebello
There’s no shortage of great food at Montebello—whether you’re looking for something casual with a view or a more refined sit-down meal, the property has a bit of everything. Here’s a quick rundown of the main spots to check out:
- Aux Chantignoles
The main restaurant at the hotel, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The space is warm and rustic with log cabin charm, and the menu focuses on fresh, local ingredients with a Québecois twist.

- Nymark
A more immersive experience that brings ancestral Québecois recipes to life with modern techniques. Expect unique dishes made from regional ingredients and paired with organic Canadian wines. It’s definitely a standout if you’re looking for something a little different. - Terrasse Le Riverain
A seasonal terrace that’s all about summer vibes. Light meals, refreshing drinks, and one of the best spots to soak up river views. - BBQ by the River
Available in the warmer months, this four-course, family-style barbecue is served along the Ottawa River and includes grilled meats, fresh seafood, salads, and house-made desserts—all enjoyed with a view. - Bar Le Foyer
Tucked next to the massive six-sided fireplace in the lobby, this cozy bar is great for a pre-dinner cocktail or a relaxed nightcap. The woodsy lodge atmosphere makes it feel extra inviting.
Our Dining Experience at Aux Chantignoles
A highlight of our stay was dinner at Aux Chantignoles, located just off the main lobby. The space was both grand and cozy, with high log ceilings, wood-paneled walls, vintage-style chandeliers, and large windows that look out over the trees and river. We had an 8 PM reservation and were seated by the window, which made for a beautiful backdrop as the sun started to set.

The menu focuses on Quebecois comfort food with seasonal ingredients and a few French-inspired touches. We started with the seasonal burrata, served with pickled cucumber, green peas, asparagus, and green beans – it was fresh and light with just enough tang from the vinaigrette. We also ordered the onion soup which was rich and savoury, topped with toasted brioche and melted Montebello cheese, making the perfect cheese pull.

For mains, we ordered the AAA Angus filet mignon, which came with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and pepper sauce, and the gratinated lasagna, layered with ricotta and a smoky tomato sauce. Both dishes were stunning!
We finished with the S’mores Cake, created as part of a special collaboration between Fairmont and Make-A-Wish. It was playful but not overly sweet with chocolate sponge, roasted marshmallow, and crème anglaise. The lemon tart was also a standout, with a sharp citrus bite and toasted meringue.

To top it off, the service was incredible. Our waiter was so kind and gave us some amazing tips! He even bought me out a ‘girlfriend fork’ with each course as I always want to try a taste of my partner’s meal. It was these little touches that made the meal truly special!
Breakfast Buffet: A Perfect Start to the Day
We returned to Aux Chantignoles the next morning for their buffet breakfast, and it was another highlight of our stay. Set in the same elegant dining room, the buffet spread was generous, offering a delicious mix of hot and cold selections:
- Fresh fruit and yogurt
- House-baked pastries and buttery croissants
- Eggs, bacon, breakfast sausages, and crispy potatoes
- Quebec cheeses, smoked salmon, and cold cuts
- Traditional French crepes with maple syrup
- A bread station with local jams and spreads
- Multiple types of smoothies and fresh juices
- Cereals, seeds, and nuts
- Juice, coffee, and espresso drinks
- A made-to-order omelette station

Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. I ordered a custom omelette with cheese, peppers, mushrooms, and onions, made fresh right in front of me, and it was divine. I also couldn’t resist the delicate crepes drizzled with maple syrup—so simple, yet so delicious. Let’s just say my boyfriend went back for four plates, and we both left feeling full and very happy!

Our waiter was once again wonderful. We had a few friendly chats between plates, and to our delight, he brought out a plate of bread and butter pudding with maple syrup—a warm Canadian treat we hadn’t tried before.

Final Thoughts: One of the Best Resorts in Quebec for a Relaxing Getaway
After just one night at Fairmont Le Château Montebello, I completely understood why it’s considered one of the best resorts in Quebec. From the moment we stepped into the grand log cabin lobby, it felt like we were transported to a luxurious wilderness retreat—warm, welcoming, and full of character.

Even with a short stay, we got a true taste of what makes this place so special. Sipping wine and playing chess by the stone fireplace, walking along the Ottawa River at sunset, feeling like kids again as we crammed in as many activities as possible, and ending the day with a decadent dinner at Aux Chantignoles—it was the perfect blend of cozy and adventurous.
One thing that really stood out to me was the staff. I can’t stress enough how genuinely lovely everyone was. From the reception team who kindly let us check in four hours early, to the hilarious and kind servers at dinner and breakfast, and the knowledgeable crew at the activity centre who gave us great tips on where to explore by bike—everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the entire property felt beautifully maintained, with charming nods to its 93-year history around every corner.

Whether you want a romantic weekend, a family trip with plenty to do, or a girls’ weekend away, this resort has you covered. Plus, it’s within driving distances from Montreal & Ottawa! We left feeling recharged, well-fed, and already planning a return visit—maybe in the fall when the leaves are at their peak, or in winter to see the lodge blanketed in snow.
Add Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello to your bucket list for 2025 (or beyond)—you won’t regret it!
