I recently spent three unforgettable days exploring Tropical North Queensland and it was honestly one of the most amazing trips I’ve ever done! From stunning coral reefs to ancient rainforests, this region offers some of the most diverse landscapes in Australia. I spent three days snorkelling, eating amazing food, riding on one of Australia’s most historic trains, cruising on a gondola above the majestic Barron Falls and seeing the Great Barrier Reef from above.

There is no gatekeeping here – this blog shares my best Cairns itinerary for three days, combining island time on (and even above) the Great Barrier Reef, rainforest adventures in Kuranda and a relaxing escape into the Daintree. It is the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and iconic experiences, and ideal for first time visitors to the region. If you are short on time but want to see the very best, this guide is for you

I flew into Cairns Airport, hired a car part way through the trip, and packed in some of the best things to do in Cairns and beyond. If you are planning a Tropical North Queensland holiday and wondering how to make the most of it, keep reading!
Where to Stay in Cairns: Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort
For my time in Cairns, I stayed at Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort for 2 nights, and it was the perfect base for exploring the city. The hotel is located right in the heart of Cairns, just steps away from the Night Markets, restaurants, and the marina where many tours depart. One of the standout features is that it is home to Cairns’ only swim up bar, so it’s the perfect location to sip on a pina colada after a day exploring Cairns!

I stayed in a Pool View Deluxe Room, which was spacious, comfortable, and overlooked the lagoon style pool. After long days exploring, it was so nice to come back to a calm, air conditioned room and relax.
The central location makes Novotel a great option if you want convenience, comfort, and easy access to many of the best things to do in Cairns.
Day 1: Fitzroy Island Day Trip from Cairns
If there is one day trip you have to do while visiting Cairns, this is it. Fitzroy Island was hands down one of the most incredible day trips I have ever experienced, and it is the perfect introduction to the beauty of Tropical North Queensland. I recommend booking the ‘Best of Island Package’ with Sunlover Reef Cruises, for the most fun and stress-free tour!
Start your morning with brekkie at your hotel, or at a cafe along the marina. Your day then begins at Cairns Marina, which is just a short walk from most central hotels, including the Novotel. This is where you will meet the friendly Sunlover team and check in for your Fitzroy Island adventure. The marina itself is worth arriving early for, with palm trees lining the waterfront and boats bobbing against the bright blue water. It already feels like you are on holiday before you even step on the ferry.

Morning: The Ferry Ride to Fitzroy Island
Once it is time to board, you will hop onto the Sunlover ferry for the scenic 45 minute journey to Fitzroy Island. The ferry has two levels, so you can choose to sit inside in air conditioning or outside on the open deck if you want to soak up the sunshine and ocean views. I highly recommend spending at least part of the trip outside if the weather allows, as the colour of the water is unreal.
After boarding, the crew will help you collect your snorkelling gear. This includes a mask, fins, snorkel, buoyancy vest, and a protective Lycra stinger suit. Even if you are visiting outside peak stinger season, it is still a good idea to wear the suit for sun protection and peace of mind. Stinger season in Tropical North Queensland typically runs from November to May, so if you are visiting during those months, wearing a stinger suit is essential.
As the ferry pulls away from Cairns, keep an eye out for islands in the distance and changing shades of blue beneath the surface. The journey itself feels like part of the experience and builds the excitement for what is waiting ahead.

Arriving on Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island is part of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is one of the easiest tropical islands to reach from Cairns. Despite being so close to the mainland, it feels completely untouched and wild. The island is covered in lush rainforest and surrounded by fringing coral reefs that are home to an incredible variety of marine life.
Unlike many sandy islands, a lot of Fitzroy Island’s beaches are made up of naturally crushed coral. These coral fragments were formed over thousands of years from ancient reefs and gradually shaped by tropical storms. It gives the shoreline a unique texture and bright white colour that contrasts beautifully with the turquoise water.
As soon as you step off the ferry, you are welcomed by clear water, tropical greenery, and that relaxed island atmosphere that instantly makes you slow down.

Walk to Nudey Beach
One of the first things I recommend doing is heading straight to Nudey Beach. This iconic beach has been voted Australia’s best beach and it is easy to see why. The walk to Nudey Beach takes around 15 to 20 minutes and is part of the experience in itself.
The walking track winds through rainforest and coastal scenery, with glimpses of the ocean peeking through the trees. It is well maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, just remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
When you arrive, Nudey Beach feels like a postcard come to life. Crystal clear water, smooth coral sand, and large granite boulders framing the shoreline.Spend some time relaxing on the beach or jump straight into the water for a snorkel. The coral reef is easily accessible from the shore, making it perfect for beginners and experienced snorkellers alike. You can spot colourful fish swimming through coral gardens just metres from the beach.

Glass Bottom Boat Tour
After soaking up Nudey Beach, make your way back to the main beach area for your glass bottom boat tour. This is included in the Best of Island package and is a great option if you want to see the reef without getting wet or if you want a break from swimming.
The glass bottom boat allows you to glide over coral formations while spotting tropical fish, giant clams, and other marine life through the clear panels beneath your feet. The guides share interesting facts about the reef and its ecosystem, making it both relaxing and educational. It is also a great way to appreciate how vibrant the Great Barrier Reef still is around Fitzroy Island.

Lunch at Foxys
By now, you will likely be feeling hungry, and this is where the tropical picnic lunch comes in. With the Best of Island package, you can pick up your lunch box from Foxys Bar on the island.
The lunch box is super generous and perfect for a day of exploring. Mine included a fresh sandwich, salad, pasta, a muffin, and nuts. It is easy to carry and can be enjoyed wherever you like, whether that is at a picnic table, on the beach, or under the shade of palm trees. Foxys itself has a relaxed island vibe and is a great spot to grab a cold drink if you feel like it.

Afternoon Activities on Fitzroy Island
After lunch, the afternoon is yours to spend however you like. You can head back into the water for more snorkelling at the main beach, where the conditions are often calm and ideal for spotting marine life.
If you feel like staying on land, Fitzroy Island also has several walking tracks that take you through the rainforest and even to the summit. These walks offer a completely different perspective of the island and are a great way to see native plants, birds, and scenic lookouts.

Returning to Cairns
In the mid to late afternoon, you will board the ferry back to Cairns. This is the perfect time to relax, scroll through photos, and reflect on what an incredible day you have just had. Watching the island slowly fade into the distance is bittersweet, but knowing you are heading back to Cairns for a relaxing evening definitely softens the blow!
Once back in Cairns, check in to the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort if you have not already done so. This hotel is located right in the heart of Cairns, just steps away from the Night Markets and the marina. One of its best features is Cairns’ only swim up bar, which feels like a tropical resort oasis in the middle of the city. After a long day in the sun, there is nothing better than a refreshing dip in the lagoon style pool. A pina colada from the swim up bar is an absolute must!

Evening at Cairns Night Markets
To finish off your first day, head to the Cairns Night Markets. This lively spot is filled with souvenir stalls, local crafts, massage spas, and casual food options. It is a fun place to wander, pick up a few keepsakes, grab dinner and enjoy the buzz of the city in the evening.
Day 2: Kuranda, the Scenic Railway, and the Daintree Rainforest
On day 2 you trade the reef for the rainforest and make your way from Cairns into one of the oldest living rainforests on Earth. Start the morning by checking out of your Cairns accommodation and picking up your hire car. I used KINTO from Pacific Toyota, which was an easy and stress free experience. Having your own car gives you complete flexibility for exploring Kuranda, Port Douglas, and the Daintree at your own pace, which I highly recommend for this itinerary.

Morning: Kuranda Scenic Railway in Gold Class
With your car sorted, head to Freshwater Station for the Kuranda Scenic Railway. I chose the Gold Class 9:30 am service, which is well worth it if you want a more relaxed and special experience. You start with a delicious mocktail before getting on the train, which is super refreshing in the heat!

Gold Class includes comfortable seating, personal service, a souvenir gift and local refreshments as you wind your way up through the rainforest. You get your own menu to choose your preferred drink (I opted for the Australian sparkling which was delish). You also get morning tea – we got a yummy pork and fennel sausage roll, goats cheese tart and lemon myrtle muffin. The historic railway journey takes you past deep ravines, cascading waterfalls, and dense tropical forest, with large windows that make it easy to take photos along the way.

The train itself is a piece of Queensland history, originally built in the late 1800s to connect Cairns with the Atherton Tablelands. As you climb higher into the rainforest (to 327 metres), the temperature cools slightly and the scenery becomes even more dramatic.

One of the highlights is stopping at Barron Falls, where you can step out onto a viewing platform and take in the scale of the waterfall and surrounding gorge. I visited in rainy season and the falls were absolutely spectacular! The journey takes approx 2 hours and is truly one of the most amazing train trips you will ever take.

Mid Day: Exploring Kuranda Village
Once you arrive in Kuranda, you have a few hours to explore the village. Kuranda has a laid back, quirky feel, with a strong focus on local art, culture, and nature. Wander through the heritage markets where you will find handmade jewellery, artwork, souvenirs, and locally made products. There are also plenty of cafes and casual eateries if you feel like grabbing a coffee or an early lunch.

If you have extra time, you can visit one of Kuranda’s wildlife attractions or simply enjoy strolling through the village, listening to live music, and soaking up the rainforest atmosphere. Kuranda feels very different from Cairns. It is slower, greener, and more connected to the natural surroundings.

Afternoon: Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
In the early afternoon, it is time to head back down the mountain via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This gondola starts at Kuranda and gives you a completely different perspective of the rainforest and is a great way to experience it from above.
The cableway glides quietly over the canopy, offering sweeping views of the rainforest stretching all the way to the coast. There are two stops along the way (Red Peak and Barron Falls) where you can hop off and explore boardwalks, lookouts, and interpretive displays that explain the unique ecosystem of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
The contrast between the train journey up and the cableway ride down makes this a perfect pairing and is one of the most popular experiences in Tropical North Queensland for good reason. You get panoramic views of Barron Gorge and Barron Falls, which is the most amazing experience!
A one-way trip takes approx 1.5 hours including time to get off at each stop. Once you reach the bottom, you are back at your car and ready to begin the next chapter of your journey.

Drive to the Daintree Rainforest
From here, start the scenic drive north towards the Daintree Rainforest. The drive itself is stunning, especially once you pass Port Douglas and begin following the coastline.
Make sure to stop at the Rex Lookout – a coastal lookout just north of Port Douglas. This viewpoint offers breathtaking views where the rainforest-covered mountains meet the sea. It is one of the most photographed spots in the region and a perfect place to stretch your legs and take a few photos.
Continuing north, the landscape becomes even more lush and wild as you approach the Daintree. This drive takes approx 1.5 hours.

Late Afternoon: Checking in at Daintree Ecolodge
By late afternoon, you will arrive at Daintree Ecolodge, tucked away in the heart of the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. This Intrepid property retreat feels like a true luxury escape from the outside world.

The lodge is home to just 15 eco friendly treehouses, known as bayans, each designed to blend seamlessly into the rainforest environment. Staying here feels immersive in the best possible way. You fall asleep to the sounds of the forest and wake to birds calling from the canopy above.

After checking in (I highly recommend staying in a Canopy Treehouse room), take some time to explore the grounds, check out their onsite waterfall or simply relax on your balcony and listen to the rainforest come alive around you.

Dinner at Julaymba Restaurant
Dinner is served at Julaymba Restaurant, the ecolodge’s on site rainforest dining experience. The restaurant focuses on organic, seasonal ingredients inspired by the region using produce from their own garden.

Eating dinner surrounded by the rainforest, with soft lighting and the sounds of nature in the background, is an experience in itself. It is the perfect way to unwind after a full day of travel and exploration.

After dinner, head back to your treehouse for a restful night in one of the most unique settings imaginable.

Day 3: Rainforest Relaxation and a Scenic Flight Over the Reef
Your final day in Tropical North Queensland is all about slowing down, indulging a little, and ending the trip on a high.
Breakfast in the Rainforest
Wake up early to the sounds of the rainforest and head to Julaymba Restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast is included with your stay and features fresh, locally inspired options served in a peaceful rainforest setting.

Spa Experience at Daintree Ecolodge
After breakfast, treat yourself to a massage at the Daintree Ecolodge Spa. The spa focuses on rejuvenating mind, body, and soul, using natural products and techniques that reflect the surrounding environment. I recommend getting the Yulmarril (Welcome) which includes a tailored massage followed by a facial targeting your skin’s needs.
This is the perfect way to fully embrace the slower pace of the rainforest and leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend booking this in advance.

MidDay: Drive Back to Cairns
After checking out, it is time to begin the drive back to Cairns. While it is always hard to leave the Daintree, the journey back is scenic and gives you time to reflect on just how much you have experienced in only three days! Once back in Cairns, return your hire car and prepare for one final unforgettable experience.
Late Lunch at Cairns Marina
Before your final activity, head to Cairns Marina for lunch. There are plenty of great options here, from relaxed waterfront dining to more polished restaurants.Places like Dundee’s are popular for good reason, offering classic Australian dishes (like crocodile and kangaroo) with marina views. It is a lovely spot to enjoy a final meal before heading to the airport.
Afternoon: Scenic Flight Over the Great Barrier Reef
To finish the trip, take a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef. Seeing the reef from the air offers a completely different perspective and really highlights the sheer size and beauty of this natural wonder.

Book your flight through Get Your Guide. The flight lasts around 40 minutes and takes you over coral reefs, sandy cays, and shades of blue that seem almost unreal. You will fly over Green Island, Oyster Reef, Vlasoff Cay, Pixie Reef and many more. With large windows and informative commentary from the pilot, it is both breathtaking and educational!

Spotting marine life from above, such as turtles, dugongs, rays, and even whales in season, makes this a true bucket list experience and the perfect way to tie together your reef and rainforest adventure.

Now it’s time to head home. Your scenic flight is a 5 minute drive from Cairns airport so you’re in the perfect spot to head back home!
From reef to rainforest, this 3-day Cairns itinerary proves just how much you can experience in a short time in Tropical North Queensland. Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, riding historic railways through Kuranda, gliding above ancient rainforest canopies, unwinding in the Daintree Rainforest, and soaring over coral cays from the sky creates a journey that is as diverse as it is unforgettable. If you’re planning your first visit to Cairns and want a perfectly balanced mix of adventure, relaxation, luxury, and iconic sights, this Reef to Rainforest: The Best Cairns Itinerary for 3 Days shows that you truly can have it all. Few places in the world let you move so seamlessly between two World Heritage wonders — and that’s exactly what makes Tropical North Queensland so special.
