In November 2024, I went on my first visit to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for a relaxing week-long holiday at the Grand Bavaro Princess. To get there, I flew Air Canada Rouge Flight AC1792 from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The flight, operated on an Airbus A321-200 in Economy Class, departed at 18:10 and landed 4 hours and 35 minutes later at 23:45 local time. This Air Canada AC179 Flight Review covers every aspect of the journey, from booking to landing, the in-flight experience and what you can expect when flying this popular route.

Booking Experience
In September 2024, I began searching for flights using Google Flights & SkyScanner to compare options and find the most budget-friendly direct route. To my surprise, Air Canada was the most affordable option for my preferred date compared to a budget airline. After exploring pricing on Google Flights, I booked directly through Air Canada’s website. This allowed me to log into my Aeroplan account for easy access to my details. For two people (I was travelling with my boyfriend), the total cost was $1,286.82 CAD, which came to $643.41 per person for a round trip with direct flights. Given this was an international flight, I was super impressed with the price. The booking process itself was seamless and efficient. I received an immediate confirmation email after payment, which included all key details: booking reference, receipt, cost breakdown, flight information, baggage allowance, and more. As usual with Air Canada, the straightforward process gave me confidence in their reliability and service quality.

Baggage Policy for Air Canada AC1792 Flight
Air Canada’s baggage policy includes one carry-on item (such as a small suitcase or duffel bag) with maximum dimensions of 21.5” x 15.5” x 9”, and one personal item (like a backpack or handbag) measuring up to 17” x 13” x 6”. To make the most of this allowance, we packed two small wheeled bags, a backpack, and a handbag between us—at no extra cost. One feature I really love about Air Canada is their lack of weight limits for carry-on luggage. As long as you can store the item in the overhead bin without assistance, you’re good to go. For checked luggage, we opted to share one suitcase, which we added during check-in for $35 CAD. The checked bag allowance permits up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds), which was more than enough for our week-long trip.Overall, Air Canada’s baggage policy is both flexible and budget-friendly, eliminating the stress of last-minute repacking at the airport (a situation I often find myself in)!

Check-in Process
The check-in process with Air Canada was exceptionally smooth and efficient. On the day of my flight, I received an email notification that check-in was open, complete with a direct link, my reference number, and baggage allowance details. During check-in, we added and paid for one checked bag. We were also offered the option to check our carry-on bags at no extra cost—a convenient option we gladly accepted since they only contained clothes and shoes. This saved us from carrying them through the airport and figuring out overhead storage. The online check-in process took less than a minute. I instantly received my mobile boarding passes, which were easily accessible via my Apple Wallet or the Air Canada + Aeroplan app.
Pro Tip: Download the Air Canada + Aeroplan app. It’s a versatile tool that allows you to book flights, access boarding passes, preview seat maps, receive reservation updates, and even use the Rouge Player entertainment feature on eligible flights.
At the airport, the bag drop process was seamless, with no queues, making it quick and hassle-free. Security was also efficient, and within approximately 20 minutes, we had reached the international departure section at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (YUL). Overall, the check-in process was incredibly convenient and stress-free.
Pro Tip: You can track your personalized journey through YUL, tailored to your passport and travel details, using this handy tool here.

Pre-Flight & Boarding
The departure gate for my flight was Gate A65. The international zone at YUL has an impressive selection of restaurants, cafés, shopping, and entertainment options. Highlights include:
Dining: Hurley’s Irish Pub, L’Auberge Saint-Gabriel, quick bites like Montréal Bagels, UpperCrust and La Biscuitery, as well as bars like UBar for a pre-flight cocktail.
Shopping: A large duty-free area and outlets like iStore and Sunglass Hut.
Wellness: Balnea Spa, where you can enjoy massages, manicures, pedicures, and more—a unique touch for an airport.
For lounge options, YUL features Air France KLM Lounge, Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, Salon Banque Nationale, and Desjardins Odyssey lounges. We tried to access the Air France Lounge using our AMEX Gold Reward Card via Priority Pass. Unfortunately, the lounge was full, and being placed on the waitlist didn’t pan out—a minor letdown, though understandable given the airport’s busyness.
Instead, we dined at Carlos & Pepe’s, a Mexican restaurant. The nachos I ordered were super delicious, especially for airport food. The restaurant was quiet, and its large windows offered a great view of planes taking off and landing.

Near gate A65, there were plenty of entertainment options, including games and arcades as well as washroom facilities. Air Canada kept us informed with email notifications and real-time updates via their mobile app. Overall, the boarding was efficient and well-organized by zones, ensuring a smooth process.

Seat Selection and Comfort
Choosing not to pay for a preferred seat, we were randomly assigned seats 15D and 15E, the aisle and middle seats on the right-hand side of the plane. The Economy Class cabin on the Air Canada Rouge Airbus A321-200 features a 3-3 layout. Fortunately, the flight was quiet, and no one occupied the seat next to us, giving us the entire row to ourselves.
The seat pitch of 30 inches and width of 18 inches were both above the industry standard, providing a notably comfortable experience. The spacious legroom and seat design offered a level of comfort that made the journey more enjoyable.

The seats featured a slight recline option and an adjustable headrest. Each seat had a built-in stand on the back of the seat making it easy to secure a phone or tablet for watching shows or movies. The cabin crew dimmed the lights during the flight, and combined with the comfortable seating, I was able to enjoy two hours of uninterrupted sleep—a surprisingly refreshing experience for a short-haul journey. Overall, the quiet flight and above-standard comfort of the seats made for a truly relaxing journey.

In-Flight Entertainment on Air Canada AC1792 Flight
The Air Canada Rouge Airbus A321-200 (321) didn’t feature personal seat-back televisions. However, I could access in-flight entertainment via the Air Canada Wi-Fi portal or the app on my own device. The system offered a wide range of movies, including new releases, TV shows, audiobooks, music, and games to keep me entertained throughout the flight. Air Canada has partnered with Apple TV, Audible, Disney+, and Hayu, providing an extensive library of content. The entertainment system also supports 15 language options, with subtitles available in several languages, making it accessible to a broad audience.
In-Flight Entertainment Rating: 3.5/5
Connectivity
One highlights of the flight was the complimentary texting perk for Aeroplan members, which provided seamless access to messaging platforms like Apple iMessage, Meta Messenger, and WhatsApp at no additional cost. Each seat included a conveniently placed power outlet between seats so I could charge my devices. Air Canada also offers paid Wi-Fi packages, ranging from a one-hour pass for $10.25 CAD to a full-flight pass for $21.00 CAD.
While the complimentary texting for Aeroplan members, reliable charging options, and flexible Wi-Fi plans were standout features, the absence of free Wi-Fi—a feature increasingly common on other international flights—was a slight drawback.
Connectivity Rating: 4.5/5

Food & Beverages
Onboard, the complimentary food and beverage service included both alcoholic (beer and wine) and non-alcoholic drink options, served twice during the flight. Light snacks such as pretzels and a cookie were also provided. If you’re after something more substantial, the Air Canada Bistro menu offered a variety of purchasable options. The menu, available in both physical format at each seat and on the Air Canada + Aeroplan mobile app, featured meals like Cheeseburger Sliders and Korean BBQ, snacks including Chicken Noodles, Pringles, and Twizzlers, and a range of beverage selection with domestic and craft beers, seltzers, spirits, and wine.

Although individual items were on the pricier side, the Bistro’s combo deal—a meal, drink, and snack for $21.95 CAD—offered good value. The menu was inclusive, featuring kid-friendly options like Mac & Cheese and vegetarian/vegan choices such as the Vegan Chickpea Wrap.
Food & Beverages: 4.5/5
On-Time Performance
Fortunately, our flight experienced no delays, and we touched down in Punta Cana right on schedule at our expected time of arrival.
On-Time Performance: 5/5
Cabin Cleanliness & Service Quality
The cabin and washrooms maintained cleanliness and tidiness. The staff were helpful and friendly. Flying with them was truly a joy!
