Whitehaven Beach is a beach that needs no introduction, as one of the most photographed beaches in the world. This world-renowned stretch of coastline is located on Whitsunday Island, the largest of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia. It is famous for its pristine white silica sand, ever changing inlet and crystal-clear turquoise waters, drawing 75,000 tourists each year. The seven kilometer beach is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park & the Whitsunday Islands National Park and is a protected world heritage site. It is frequently voted the best beach in the world and on New Year’s Day 2024, I was lucky enough to see why! I visited Airlie Beach for four days over New Years and of course booked a day trip to Whitehaven Beach, having always been a bucket list item. Our group of 4 booked with Get Your Guide’s ‘Airlie Beach: Whitehaven Beach Big Island Day Tour’ and had one of the most incredible days of our lives! Read on to uncover why!

Best Time to Visit Whitehaven Beach

The Whitsundays boasts tropical temperatures year-round, making it a destination for all seasons. With an average temperature of 27.5°C and inviting waters at 25°C, there’s never a bad time to explore. September shines as a top pick with its sunny days, minimal rain, and comfortable temperatures, coinciding perfectly with whale migration and avoiding stinger season. Summer (December to February) brings heat and occasional showers, while autumn (February to May) offers fewer crowds and cooler weather. Winter (June to August) is ideal for whale watching and smooth sailing conditions. Spring (August to October) is considered the golden season with sunny weather and ideal for sailing or exploring. On our visit in January, we experienced perfect blue skies combined with hot, humid, weather which was manageable as most of our time was spent in the water, shade, or air conditioned boat. Ultimately, each season has its perks, so plan your trip accordingly based on your own preferences and activities. The Whitehaven Beach Big Island Day Tour I went on runs daily except for Christmas day, allowing you freedom to visit Whitehaven year round.

Our group wanted a tour that would take us to Hill Inlet (a famous view point where you can view the quintessential white sand shifting between the blue water) as well as giving us ample time to swim and explore Whitehaven beach. We decided on Get Your Guide’s ‘Airlie Beach: Whitehaven Beach Big Island Day Tour’ as we were influenced by the hundreds of 5 star reviews it had, along with the fact that the itinerary would take us to both Hill Inlet Lookout in the morning as well as Whitehaven Beach in the afternoon for 2 hours of free time. We were also influenced by the fact that it included a gourmet morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea served and that the vessel was a modern, air-conditioned catamaran, which would be a perfect escape from the heat! We paid approx $210CAD/ $237 AUD for the full day tour and booked conveniently online a few days prior.

Pick up & Check In Process

Our tour included complimentary pick up from 13 spots across Airlie Beach, and our stop was just a few minutes walk away at Shute Harbour Road. The day before our tour, the company reached out to confirm our pick up time and address. Our pick up experience was seamless and before we knew it we were on the shuttle bus out of Airlie Beach and on our way to Shute Harbour where our catamaran awaited. Upon arrival at the ferry terminal, we just needed to provide our names and were then directed to the catamaran. Overall, the booking, pick up and check in experience was a breeze!

The Experience

We departed Shute Harbour at 9am on our beautiful catamaran for the day, ‘Nancy Wake’ operated by Sea Link. Nancy Wake is a 3 story vessel, with ample indoor and outdoor seating and tables and modern bathrooms. We were delighted at how cold the air conditioned boat was, as it was a hot, humid day (30 degrees/ 80% humidity) and all of our group were nursing mild hangovers from New Years Day celebrations the night before. Upon arrival, the friendly staff gave us a safety briefing as we started our 49 km cruise to Tongue bay, passing through the Molle group of Islands, Cid harbor, Nara Inlet & Hook passage. The views of the Whitsunday passage were sensational and there was informative commentary playing over the speakers. Morning tea was served, which included a buffet of fresh fruit and a huge variety of delicious pastries along with tea and coffee. On board, there was also a fully-licensed bar, where you can purchase soft drinks and alcoholic beverages at an additional cost.

Hill Inlet Lookout

Around 10:30 am, we reached Tongue Point, our first stop on land. Positioned on the northern side of Hill Inlet, Tongue Point offers stunning views of the crystal-clear water, although nothing compared to what awaited us shortly! In tenders, groups of 20 were shuttled from our vessel to the shore. From there, we started on a guided bush walk up a short 750-meter trail to Hill Inlet Lookout, in small, staggered crowds to minimize crowding. We arrived at the top of Hill Inlet 15 minutes later, where we got our first glimpse of the incredible white strips of silica sand shifting through the swirls of turquoise, blue and green water. We were lucky enough to arrive at low tide, where we witnessed the mesmerizing sight of the water receding, revealing the pristine white sand beneath.

Hill Inlet Lookout

Hill Inlet has three lookout platforms, each offering increasingly awe-inspiring views of the swirling shapes and hues below. We had read that the Hill Inlet lookout could be very crowded, however we were fortunate enough that our group of 20 were virtually the only people up there, allowing us ample time to capture photos, soak in the dazzling scenery, and even spot stingrays and lemon sharks in the bay below. After admiring the spectacle for around 30 minutes, we descended the trail back to the beach, everyone having worked up an appetite and ready to explore what’s next!

I highly recommend choosing a tour like the Big Island Day Tour that takes you to Hill Inlet Lookout. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience and should be on everyone’s bucket list!

Cruising to Whitehaven Beach

Our gourmet lunch was served on-board as we made our way from Tongue Point to Whitsunday Island. The lunch was delicious and included a huge array of fresh sushi, salads, meat and bread. After fuelling up, we got into stinger suits, which were provided by the tour. Stinger season in the Whitsundays is from October – May, and during this time it is important to wear a full body stinger suit when swimming or snorkeling to avoid getting stung by a marine stinger. The chances of getting stung are rare, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! The provided stinger suits are lightweight, comfortable and also have the added advantage of protecting you for the sun, so I highly recommend following the guide’s advice to wear them if you are visiting in stinger season.

Whitehaven Beach

Our vessel anchored at Whitehaven Beach around 1 pm, and once again, tenders ferried us ashore. This iconic beach stretches for seven kilometers, with sand that’s composed of 98% silica, which makes it exceptionally soft and a dazzling white hue that almost glows. The silica sand doesn’t retain heat from the sun, allowing visitors to stroll along the shoreline without burning their feet. Our knowledgeable guides also shared that the fine texture of the sand makes it ideal for exfoliating, essentially offering a free spa experience right there on the beach!

Whitehaven Beach

With just over two hours of free time, we spent the afternoon swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear water, relaxing on the soft sand, and exploring the lush bushland. We spotted tons of fish in the water and even saw two lace monitors fighting! Our guides set up a few gazebos for anyone wanting to escape the sun, and brought along eskies filled with ice-cold ciders and beers to enjoy on the beach. While we could have stayed all day, it was eventually time to say a reluctant goodbye to Whitehaven beach, having had an unforgettable day.

Journey Home

Our boat journey back home took around 1 hour, sailing through the picturesque Whitsunday Islands National Park. We were treated to a lovely afternoon tea, featuring a delicious charcuterie buffet, as we enjoyed the scenic route back. We even spotted dolphins near Hamilton Island, which was the perfect end to our day. Once we arrived back at Shute Harbour, we said goodbye to our incredible tour guides and departed via a complimentary coach that took us back to our accommodation.

Final Thoughts

The Big Island Day Tour was truly one of the best days of my life! From the breathtaking morning views at Hill Inlet to the afternoon spent swimming at Whitehaven Beach, every moment was unforgettable. The tour guides were exceptional, going above and beyond to ensure our group had an amazing experience, from taking group photos to sharing their expertise and providing delicious meals and snacks throughout the day. The entire experience was seamlessly organized, from pickup to drop-off, making it incredibly convenient. Plus, the value for money was unbeatable, at just $210 CAD / $237 AUD for a day packed with adventure aboard a beautiful catamaran, including delicious meals and stinger suits. Know Before You Go

  • Be sun smart: The sun in North Tropical Queensland is intense, so ensure you protect yourself by wearing SPF50 sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and covered clothing. Reapply sunscreen frequently to avoid sunburn.
  • Stay hydrated: Bring a water bottle to refill onboard and stay hydrated during excursions, especially in the hot and humid weather.
  • Stinger season awareness: From October to May, it’s stinger season in the Whitsundays. When swimming or snorkeling during this time, wear a full-body stinger suit provided by your guide to prevent stings from marine stingers. Though stings are rare, it’s better to err on the side of caution.
  • Respect the environment: Whitehaven Beach is a pristine natural wonder, so be mindful of your impact. Refrain from littering or leaving anything behind.
  • Protect the sand: The sand at Whitehaven Beach is unique and protected, as it’s no longer replenished by the ocean. Taking sand as a souvenir is strictly prohibited, and hefty fines are enforced for those who attempt to do so.
  • Sand and shell collection: Just as you cannot remove sand, you also cannot take shells from Whitehaven Beach. Both sand and shells are part of the protected green zone, preserving the beach’s natural beauty for future generations. Resist the temptation to take anything home and instead leave only footprints behind.
